Theology of Mission
God is purposeful. God is mighty. He is the creator and sustainer of all life. He is a loving God, willing that all should be reconciled to Him through His Son, whom he has sent for that purpose. Both eternal life and abundant life are available only through Jesus Christ.
Mission must flow from the very nature of God. God is holy. He stands out above and beyond all creation as the one perfect being. When an individual comes into contact with the living God, he senses the magnitude and the size of the holy One. He is humbled, and accepts the cup of Christ, which is the sacrifice of his own life—worship.
Mission must also be based upon the purposes of God. It is only when we understand His purpose that we can realize ours. God’s purpose is evidenced by the Father’s acts in history—by his mighty works on behalf of His chosen people and all His creation. God’s purpose is observed in the life of the Son Jesus Christ as He, in fleshly form, was about His Father’s business on this earth—even unto death. And God’s purpose is made known to us in our lives today through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. God is a missionary God. He has an eternal purpose, based on His love for mankind. As God’s people on this earth we have the privilege of sharing His love with others.
A church is a body of baptized believers, saved by their faith in Jesus Christ, who have willingly joined together for the purposes of glorifying God and encouraging one another in mission. It is a family united in purpose.
The mission of the church is to glorify God and to be the tangible source of His presence in this world. The goal of mission is to empower believers toward that objective. We see it as our privilege to help others experience the character of God and to guide them into an authentic relationship with the Father. For believers this involves helping them grow closer to Christ and deeper in faith. To the lost it is our desire to present the good news of an awesome God who offers salvation to those who believe.
To be vessels for His work—this is our mission. Like Christ we are sent by our Father to demonstrate the height and breadth of His love: to heal the sick, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, and to proclaim freedom for the imprisoned.
This love of God changes lives. Conversion is more than a moment at which someone is made right with God. Conversion is a much larger process that encompasses both accepting Jesus as Lord and becoming more like Him. It is our intention that Christians be transformed—sanctified, set apart completely for the Father’s service. We were called to more than eternal life with God in heaven; we have been called to a life with Him now, a sharing of His purpose.
Core Values
- God is good, and worthy of all praise, honor, and glory.
- We as humanity exist to glorify God and to enjoy him, and our lives in him, forever.
- We as the church are the body of Christ, and exist to carry out his mission in the world.
- Christ’s mission in the world is to usher in the kingdom of God, seek and save the lost into that kingdom so they may live the lives for which they were created — ultimately bringing glory to God.
- It is not our responsibility to draw men to Christ, nor is it our responsibility to save them. It is our responsibility to point others to kingdom life through our own existence in that kingdom, and to share God’s love with them.
- Our ministry is only possible, because all authority belongs to Jesus Christ and he is with us always through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
- Our ministry is an holistic ministry, in which we strive to deal with all aspects of human life, much in the same way as Jesus himself.
- We aim to make all developments sustainable, thus encouraging and promoting independence.
- We aspire to make all advances reproducible, thus making multiplication possible and inherent.
